For a class assigment i need some of you to answer a question. It's not hard or needing a complicated answer unless you want to give one but here it is:

Thank you.

quality television is programing that is unique, thought provoking, and cleverly constructed. Whether it appeals to your emotions through narrative and character, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or to your higher level of intelligence though engaging dialouge and innovative writting, like Arrested Development. Quality television is programming that you can not idly watch, but are forced to engage in.

hope that helps :)

good tv has convincing acting, an engaging plot,a set of characters you can empathise with and production values/budget that is sufficiently large to allow for decent special effects if they are needed or at least a set that doesn't wobble.

Quality television has to have all that and also offer something you have never seen before in terms of the concept. Also if it runs for more than about six eps I would expect to see some character development/evolution.

For instance I would say House is good television because of the acting and the writing but at it's core it is really just a medical version of csi. I'd say Firefly was quality tv because it managed to take the Western and sci fi genres mix them up to create a unique show.

That sounds great in theory doesn't it? In practice I am such a telly addict that I'll give almost anything a try ( except reality shows.)lol

Quality television for me is a mix of an interesting format, engaging characters and clever writing in terms of continuity, wordplays and unique character voices and the ability to still surprise their core audience and withstand several viewings. Quality TV doesn’t feed the plot or character motivation with a spoon or intravenous, it counts on the fact that their viewers are intelligent enough to ‘get it’ which is a reason why it often struggles with ratings. Exposition is multilayered, really toned down or overexposed.

My examples would be Arrested Development and Veronica Mars – they combine every aspect mentioned above, especially continuity and strength of unique writing. Sadly also the rating drop. The X files as a rating success and phenomenon is a good example that quality TV isn’t bound to die an early death. Angel or Buffy are good examples for the ‘cult factor’ it often inspires and the unique world it can create.

And now I’m off to bed… *yawn*
