I posted this in another thread about the Torchwood Book "Almost Perfect" but I believe it and the explanations that created this deserve their own place in my journal. Even added the bit about Ianto, you can tell i love him as he gets the most out of entire train wreck.
So onto The Realistic Not Perfect Story of Jack and Gwen:
Jack and Gwen get together, they have sex (good sex) and for a few weeks their happy. Life continues but then Gwen feels something is missing Jack’s still Jack and already married to Torchwood. And Torchwood always comes first. So Gwen starts asking for more from him. “Do we have to spend so much time at the Hub?” “Why don’t you come out with me and meet my friends/parents?”, “Where are we going?”, “Should we move in together?”, “Should we get married? Have kids?” Jack doesn’t know, he lives in the now, doesn’t like to think about the future because it only ends her death. She eventually lets in drop.
They go on, but Gwen is still unhappy, it’s just like before except for the sex now. She thinks the problem is that Jack still keeps his secrets. She starts pressing him to reveal them all of them to her with no avail. It only makes Jack shutdown (cause she pushes to hard, demands instead of letting him go at their own pace). Ianto withdraws from both of them ‘cause its just too uncomfortable and doesn't want to get in the middle (I'm betting he's off laughing somewhere, he knew this would happen). Now they’re fighting all the time, well mostly Gwen with Jack trying to stay calm but he eventually snaps (well think the mutiny scene of End of Days where she hits him). Gwen’s unhappy ‘cause this isn’t what she wanted, Jack tells her that if she wanted the domestic life then she should have stayed with Rhys. It lasts two months, a little more if there are big disasters. Because Gwen had forced Jack to make the first move so she puts the blame on him for messing up her life, she didn’t want this. That’s Jack’s last straw and they break up (There’s always a choice!). After that, they have trouble working together, and it interferes with their jobs. Eventually she can’t stand it and she has to go, move on. Jack doesn’t retcon her (cause I don’t believe they retcon everyone, only the ones who leave in bad standing) and she goes back to the police in a much higher position. She’s still loyal to Torchwood and now Cardiff Police and Torchwood never worked so well together. Gwen may or may not try to get together with Rhys.
Ianto, now second-in-command, tries not to say “I told you so” and they continue on, hire more staff. Jack wants things to go back to the way things were but it too late Ianto’s not the same man anymore. He’s grown up and is more confident, more aggressive and a leader. Ianto knew what would happen (‘cause Ianto knows everything) if he got with Gwen and warned him, he's more angry about the fact it broke up the team. However, he’s still Jack’s right hand man and confidant but now have a new game of “Who got there first” with the new pretty office eye-candy (or alien or other gender to be decided person in a bar).Torchwood goes on.
